The Phillip Project

Philip is a well-educated, heterosexual man who lives with his wife and kids in Uganda. However, he has a gay family member who has suffered greatly due to his sexuality. Consequently, Philip dedicated himself to fighting the religious persecution of those in the LGBTQ+ community at the hands of the Church. Using resources such as the book, The Children Are Free, he ministers to pastors and theological leaders in East Africa, addressing key passages of Scripture frequently used against homosexuals and teaching about instances in the Bible where homosexuality is accepted.

Recently, he embarked upon a “tour” of churches and religious venues across South and East Africa involving several countries. While traveling by motorcycle, he hit a small animal, a rodent, on the road while isolated in the desert of Namibia. Thrown from his bike, he sustained multiple spinal fractures–at least one comminuted (in many pieces). Hundreds of miles from civilization, he could have easily died along the roadside, but someone found him and brought him to a hospital. With unstable fractures, he could not walk, and a long, bumpy car ride back home would not work either. He was able to be evacuated by plane to Uganda, where he remained on bed rest until a visiting surgeon could come to treat him–a full two weeks later.

By the grace of God, LifeJourney Church paid for his $6,000 USD surgery. He’s survived and now has a long road of rehab ahead of him. In the last week since surgery, he has had low WBC counts and malaria–both successfully treated. The surgical hardware may come out in a matter of a few months. His spirits remain high, and he has grown fearless in his God-given mission to end the stigma in the church against the gay community.

Dr. Tara wants to bring Philip to the US to raise money and awareness of this ministry as well as his own, Crossing Lines Africa. He will not be able to travel for at least 6 months, late March of 2023. Costs for airfare, lodging, food, and transportation would come to approximately $4000 USD.
