Acts10 provides support to communities in need through the provisions of basic necessities in key areas:
Homelesness
Shelters provide a place to stay for a designated period of time while the individual heals from trauma and learns a trade.
Hunger
When available, the shelters serve food daily. This generally consists of rice, mashed plantains (matoke), and a sauce made from groundnuts. This sauce is really their only source of protein on most days. The shelters run out of food fairly commonly.
Peer Support Groups
Those rejected by their families, churches, mosques, and friends need a place to feel safe and let their guard down. The shelters provide this safe space. The members come to understand they’re not alone, and they gain a community of their own.
Health Care
The Drop-In Centers (DICs) provide PrEP, and HIV treatment. When patients have other medications, the DIC also provides STD testing and treatment. Clinics also provide treatment for other common illnesses, but they chronically lack money for medication.
Empowerment
Aside from PrEP and HIV treatment, the shelters primarily aim to enable their alumni to earn their own living through self-employment. This may include selling crafts, baking, animal husbandry, gardening, among other skills.
Advocacy
Acts10 continually advocates for these marginalized LGBTQ+ communities around the globe. Often, it is not safe to advocate in many of these unwelcoming areas, this is why it’s crucial that the mission of Act10 be shared with supporting allies.
